Read this before you start a repair. Home repair can involve electricity, gas, water, heights, chemicals and heavy objects. Mistakes can cause injury, fire, flooding or property damage.

General information only

The content on WikiBricolage is provided for general information and education. It is not a substitute for advice from a licensed electrician, plumber, gas technician, HVAC contractor, structural engineer, pest control operator or other qualified professional who can inspect your home.

Your responsibility

  • Turn off power, gas or water before working on a system, and confirm it is off.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and product labels, which take priority over any general guide, including ours.
  • Check local building codes and permit requirements. Some work may legally require a licensed professional.
  • Use proper protective equipment.
  • Stop and call a professional if you are unsure, if conditions differ from what a guide describes, or if a guide tells you to.

Emergencies

If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call emergency services. For electrical fires, sparks or water near live electrical equipment, keep away and call emergency services.

Pesticides and chemicals

Always follow the label. Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with ammonia or acids. In some places, including Israel, structural pest control must be done by a licensed operator.
